Vegetable Garden – Planning This Year’s Growing.

This year I started sowing seeds in early March, which I know isn’t that early, but I didn’t want them to germinate and then risk losing any seedlings to very cold weather, that can be a big risk at beginning of the year, even though I am on the South Coast of the UK.

I have been at my new place about a year and a half now.  When I moved in there was a fish pond that was of no use to me.  So I removed the fish and gave them away to friends who have ponds or aquariums.  I then drained the water, removed the lining and filled it with soil.  It’s interesting what other residents enjoy a pond.  Mr Frog wasn’t too happy, but vegetables were my priority, he will have to move to the local lake.

To fill the hole the pond left, I needed 2 tonnes of top soil and I also added in some manure that I purchased from the same garden supplier.  The top soil arrived by lorry and was craned over the side fence into the garden and then it was a matter of shoveling it into the empty pond.

It took me about 4 hours in total which for me I didn’t think was too bad!

The peas (Lord Leicester Tall Pea) I sowed were the first to germinate and as a result, also the first to be planted out into the garden.  I erected a bamboo cane frame, planted the peas and surrounded them with some chicken wire for them to grow up.  Not aesthetically pleasing, but as I have not yet been able to locate any hazel branches in the local wood yet, it will have to do.  I don’t think the peas will care and that’s the important thing, ensuring they are happy.  So far, they are doing well.  I have had to add another layer of chicken wire to the bamboo frame as they are keeping up to their name and reaching for the sky.

The garden I can see is going to keep me busy this year and I will keep the progress posted with regular updates.
