Old Town Kitchen – Goreng is Good!

A good friend of mine has more than once recommended getting lunch at Old Town Kitchen. I regularly use Trip Advisor to get a very general feel for a restaurant and from reading the reviews about a potential chef with attitude, I couldn’t resist, so I decided to pop in for a lunch time snack.

I initially ordered a Nasi Lemak, unfortunately the chef said that it wasn’t quite ready yet, which was fair enough as they had only just opened. He offered Nasi Goreng as an alternative, which I went with. Then the magic began… the chef’s “wok work” was amazing and quite hypnotic and within a few minutes it was served.

In addition to the Egg Fried Rice, it had Prawns, Chicken, Pork, Peas and a Fried Egg and a good degree of chilli spice, but only to the point where it made my sinuses run. It was delicious. The Fried Egg’s yolk oozed all over the rice, giving the rice a creamy smooth texture and there was a small garnish of cucumber to give a crunchy texture.

The quality of the Nasi Goreng was extremely promising, so I would definitely go again, as there are a number of dishes that I want to try including Pork Buns, Chicken Ho Fun and Gyoza , a Japanese Dumplings also known as Pot Stickers. As for chef being unfriendly or rude, I did not experience this. He was polite and friendly with me. I think people may be mistaking his very basic English as being abrupt. Anyway chefs are not there for their front of house skills, they are there to cook. I’m sure if you were to start talking to him in his native tongue, you would find him delightful!
